This morning I received a new email from
Family Tree DNA. I have another 111-Marker Y-DNA match. This is the 7th 111-Marker, with Genetic Distance between 6 and 10, and the surname of all 7 is Fallis/Follis.
The other 4 are Seymour, Ware, and Robinson.
You'll note that there is not one Smith.
I wonder if my surname Smith could have been different at some point in time?
Just used the
FTDNA TiP calculator. It estimates that there is a 91% chance that there is a common ancestor between me, Smith, and Follis in 12 generations or 300 years. And that is for the close 111-marker Y-DNA match with a genetic distance of 6.
TiP is an abbreviation for Time Predictor. TiP is a proprietary tool provided by Family Tree DNA which allows for a probabilistic comparison between two Y-STR haplotypes to determine the time to the most recent common ancestor (TMRCA). The program incorporates marker-specific mutation rates to increase the power and precision of the TMRCA estimates. (from International Society of Genetic Genealogy Wiki).
That calculates back to about 1718, which would mean at our 6- or 7-times Great-Grandfather’s generation. But all-things-being-equal this is only a possibility of a probability.
And I’ll just keep searching.
According to The Family Tree DNA Learning Center and using a Y-DNA 111-marker test, a Genetic Distance of Relevant Matches are genetic distance of 0 through 10.
