Days 261 – (AD 1,423) – 22.1 Miles – Jim’s Trek Part V – Mars on My Schwinn 170

Good Day,

Today I pedaled my Schwinn 170 another 22.1 miles. Totals now stand at 30,182.0 miles; 48,573.3 kilometers.

I have completed 37.1% of the distance to my next destination. I have pedaled a total of 5,280.04 miles toward my Part V of Jim’s Trek.

I'm having a hard-enough time trying to find out where my GGG-Grandfather James Smith came from to Grenada (late 1790s), and now I'm told that I must now go back at least another 170,000 years earlier than the experts thought...

"Ancient Fossils Reveal The First Humans Emerged 170,000 Years Earlier Than We Thought" , Newsweek, Hannah Osborne, Sept. 29, 2017.

And 23andMe states that I have 297 Neanderthal variants. This is more than 79% of 23andMe recorded customers.

I just got the go-ahead to post our story regarding our 149th quilt, Lee Miller. This was another different experience for Andy and me.

Lee Miller
JS AB - Feb 2017

Lee Miller was one of our quilts selected to be a part of the collection of a current and upcoming traveling collection called HERstory. It is a collection of quilts, honoring women of strength and note, celebrating honoring the 100th Anniversary of Women receiving the ability and power to vote. Thank you, Susanne Miller Jones, for your insight and accepting Andy and I to be a part of this

On September 26th The Atlantic published an article by Krishnadev Calamur “How many Refugees Will Trump Let In? The administration’s limit could be a new low."

That number is not only lower than the 50,000 the nine nonprofit groups that help resettle refugees in the U.S. had expected based on the president’s budget proposal, it’s far lower than the 75,000 refugees they had hoped to convince Trump to admit in the coming year. The number would be the lowest refugee cap announced since President Reagan signed the Refugee Act in 1980.

But I do have a question. The inhabitants of Puerto Rico are Americans. The current population of Puerto Rico as of September 28th, based on United Nations estimates is over 3.6 million people. And?

Hurricane Maria has smashed and physically obliterated that American territory. It should be a no-brainer that the current White House Administration openly accept the possible influx of Americans from Puerto Rico. And?

Also, I decided the bite, no pun intended, another one of my bucket list items. My first attempt at Pumpkin Spice Sugar donuts; baked not fried.

Question - Does anyone know which agencies are the best ones, which will allocate the best amount of funds, that one can donate to provide financial assistance following the tragedy and devastation of fellow Americans in Puerto Rico?

I just found this article from the Business Insider,

The best charities to give to for victims of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, Leana Garfield, Sep 23, 2017.

According to The Center for International Disaster Information (CIDI), which is part of the US Agency for International Development, donating money is almost the best way to give aid. Before donating material goods (like blankets, food, or toys), CIDI recommends confirming with relief organizations there is an actual need for them.

Am I slightly confused or are the currently seated politicians truly understanding that self-applied band-aids will not fix any of the current health systems?

Last night for supper Culantro Chicken Curry with Coconut Cauliflower.

Days 258 – (AD 1,420) – 23.2 Miles – Jim’s Trek Part V – Mars on My Schwinn 170

Good Day,

This morning I cycled my Schwinn 170 23.2 miles. I am keeping to my allotted time frame of 60 minutes and the bike’s resistance level of 15/25. I succeeded in topping my previous calories burned marked once again. This morning the bike registered 978 calories burned. Grand totals on this 1,420th day of cycling are 30,112.8 miles; 48,461.9 kilometers. All things being equal I still 8,088.8 more miles to go.

And I have now completed 25.2% of the distance to my next destination and goal point.

I am really pleased with my current efforts of reducing my A1c. (That’s the 90-day calculation of my early morning blood sugar count.) This morning my A1c calculated at 6.22.

Supper last night was Beef Kofta Curry with Parmesan Eggplant.

Reading - (tongue in cheek)

Scientists just discovered the first brainless animal that sleeps”, The Washington Post, Sarah Kaplan, Sep 24, 2017.

The Cassiopeia jellyfish spends most of its life resting upside down on underwater surfaces. (Photo courtesy of Caltech)

The jellyfish have no research papers to keep them awake past their bedtimes, so the scientists prevented them from sleeping by “poking” them with pulses of water every 20 minutes for an entire night. The following day, the poor creatures swam around in a daze, and the next night they slept especially deeply to make up for lost slumber.

Just received news that Susanne M. Jones’ publication “Fly Me To The Moon” is currently on display at the Library of Congress. Susanne has done one fantastic job creating, coordinating and managing the Fly Me To The Moon exhibition of quilts.

Andy and I are extremely surprised when we just found out that the page featuring one of three quilts, that are in the collection, Apollo 1, The Beginning is featured at the open page of the book at The Library of Congress.

Here’s is the image of our Apollo 1, The Beginning.

Days 256 – (AD 1,418) – 22.4 Miles – Jim’s Trek Part V – Mars on My Schwinn 170

Good Day,

Thoughts are with those sorely affected by both storms, Irma and Maria.

This morning I decided that I had better get back on my Schwinn 170. I pedaled 22.4 miles and burned 881 calories. My grand totals now stand at 30,067.5 miles; 48,389.0 kilometers.

I have also now completed 17.3% of the 580 miles to my next destination on the Red Planet.

I’m still tracking my blood sugar count, you know diabetes and all. And yes, I am back to taking metformin in consultation with my doctors.

The blue line on the graph shows my daily A1c calculation since 1 July 2016. The red line is a moving average 90-day calculation. (Yes, it is because of this line moving in an upward direction that caused some concern.)

The combination of and the further examination of my diet, exercise, and medication has resulted in a downward swing of my daily A1c numbers. I am excited that I have been able to now touch the upward moving forecast.

Our quilt “June 19th” made its debut this past weekend at Patchwork Europe 2017 in Sainte Marie Aux Mines, France. It is one of the 38 pieces that will be on display at various locations and shows throughout the world in the upcoming year. We are tickled pink.

Also, our “OPOY” (Orlando Pulse One Year) will be on display as finalists this upcoming week and weekend, September 27-30 at the MQX Quilt Festival – Midwest in Springfield, Illinois.
