Day 200 – (AD 1,362) – 21.1 Miles Today – Jim’s Trek Part V – On My Schwinn 170

Good Day,

This morning I pedaled my Schwinn 170 fitness cycle 21.1 miles. Adding this to my current tally for Part V of my Trek I have now completed 4,017.9 miles. My grand totals stand at 28,919.5 miles; 46,541.5 kilometers.

On the Mars part of my journey today I have completed 60.9% of the distance to my next destination and goal point.

OPOY - Orlando Pulse One Year

Immediately after the Orlando Pulse tragedy of June 12, 2016, Andy and I decided that we would like to design and create a commemorative quilt to continue to remember the tragedy that took place and affected so many lives of the LGBT community and families.

Our quilt is our attempt to not only remember the 49 lives so senselessly murdered but, in only a way we both can to think about the many other victims who were and continue to be so affected by the act of terror and disdain.

Our quilt OPOY is composed of 102 strips, each representing all the victims, the ones who were slaughtered and the ones who are still living today. The Grey Titanium strips are our homage to those so mercilessly eliminated in the prime of their lives. The individual colored strips represent the victims who did survive. All quilt strips are each individually quilted with a unique design that we would like to acknowledge the uniqueness of each individual.

OPOY - JS AB - June 2017

All strips are grouped together in a way that we should remember their horror. But we would like to remember that as a people we are also grouped together in a uniform but in many unique ways reaching for that oneness of each and of all.

Day 199 – (AD 1,361) – 20.0 Miles Today – Jim’s Trek Part V – On My Schwinn 170

Good Day,

This morning I cycled 20.0 miles on my Schwinn 170. Totals are now standing (albeit pedaling) at 28,898.4 miles; 46,507.6 kilometers. I sort of can taste the 30,000 and 50,000 numbers, respectively.

And while on Mars, (that’s Part V of my overall Trek), I have completed 53.8% of the distance to my next destination and goal point.

I’m having one heck of a time finding the Marriage Registration for Jacques (aka Jacob) and Marie (aka Mary) (née Katz) Brunhammer. All-things-being-equal they appeared to have been married sometime within the time-period of 1860 – 1865 in Alsace somewhere around the Mulhouse/Dornach, Haut-Rhin area in France.

They had, per Census records 14 children. From my research, Jacques immigrated to the Philadelphia area sometime in late 1875 while Marie arrived in early 1876. She arrived at the Port of Philadelphia with 6 of their children. Two more sons were born in New Jersey, Harry, and Pennsylvania, Joseph. The earliest record that I have been able to find is the Death Registration of their son Albert Brunhammer who was born in about 1868 and died in Mulhouse in April 1869.

Jacques, himself, was born in Dornach the 22nd of 1837, and I have been able to trace a good portion of his paternal ancestry. I have been searching the online database of France’s National Archives of Births, Marriages, and Deaths for the Haut-Rhin region. The trouble is that I am coming up with a “dead-end” when it comes to their Marriage Registration. Any suggestions would help?

Thank you, Cathy M-D, for your suggestion of Thann in Haut-Rhin. Just found the actual Marriage Registration for Jacques Brunhammer and Marie Katz registered 11 September 1867 at 5:00 am at the Town Hall of the Village of Thann in Haut-Rhin. Also in the document are the names of each of their parents as well as the legitimization of their son Charles Brunhammer who was born 15 November 1862

June 19 update - Our strip piecing is progressing and we can, if I dare, see some influence of Gustav Klimt and Paul Klee in our design. This new quilt is definitely a challenge for Andy and me, and all-things-being-equal we hope it the final result will meet our expectations.

Day 198 – (AD 1,360) – 20.6 Miles Today – Jim’s Trek Part V – On My Schwinn 170

Good Day,

First thing this morning, my 6th-month check-up with my GP. Bottom line, all systems are in working order, as best as they can be expected. Bacterial infection clear-up and well under control. All-things-being-equal, take-away prognosis, keep cycling, less salty snacks, and lose about 8 pounds.

And so, I cycled 20.6 miles on my Schwinn 170 this morning. I’m keeping up with my 5-hours a week program. Totals to date – 28,878.4 miles; 46,475.4 kilometers.

While on Mars I have now completed 47.2% of the distance to my next destination and goal point. I have cycled a total of 3.976.8 miles on the Martian portion of my Trek.

Soapbox –

His nibs, #45 must be reeling and nor able to sleep any more than he does. According to 538 his approval rating has dropped again and continues onward on a downward slope. And conversely, his disapproval rating is forging upward, with another small bump up as it continues.

He can be happy that he appears to have caught up with Gerald Ford…or should I say “caught down”.

All information is from FiveThirtyEight.

Our June 19's update - We're amazed at what is happening as scraps of fabric are sewn to the strips of our canvas.

Day 197 – (AD 1,359) – 20.1 Miles Today – Jim’s Trek Part V – On My Schwinn 170

Good Day,

After 1,359 days of pedaling my Schwinn fitness cycle, I’m beginning to hate pedaling. I beginning to hate the sight of the fitness cycle in my house. And to think I have only 9,343.8 out of 38,201.6 miles to go.

But, I did get on my Schwinn 170 this morning and I did cycle another 20.1 miles. My totals now stand at 28,857.8 miles; 46,442.2 kilometers.

That’s my deal for today. My mind is blank, sort of.

Day 196 – (AD 1,358) – 20.5 Miles Today – Jim’s Trek Part V – On My Schwinn 170

Good Day,

Today I cycled 20.5 miles on my Schwinn 170. Totals 28,837.7 miles; 46,409.9 kilometers.

And on Mars, I have completed 33.6% of the distance to my next destination and goal point.

I have not been reporting my early morning fasting glucose count this past couple of weeks as coupled with the bacterial infection and not exercising consistently I have seen a substantial increase in my blood sugar count. This morning the count dropped 9 mg/dLs as compared to the day before of 171 mg/dLs. All-things-being-equal and with the clear-up of the infection I should see a gradual decrease into the positive ranges. And if that doesn’t work I may have to reconsider going back to taking medication to control my diabetes.

Last night supper, my version of Jambalaya – Triple C. Chicken Thighs, Chorizo Sausage, and Crab Claw Meat.

I sort of followed the recipe, with major adjustments, as presented by Good Food – Chicken & Chorizo Jambalaya.

And this article was not about this one, who was born in Jamaica. It’s about that other guy.

The Real World, Diabetes: As cameras roll at a Jamaican resort, desperate patients seek healing”, STATNews.com, Rebecca Robbins, June 5, 2017.

“Welcome to ‘Reversed,’” he intones. Seated behind him are four of his disciples: Americans with type 2 diabetes who’ve flown to this tropical beach town to participate in a reality TV show marketed as a momentous opportunity to restore their health. Over eight days, they’ll learn to exercise and eat right and bare their struggles in cathartic therapy sessions...
The show, which will begin airing next month on cable, is at once a vehicle for Mattocks to proselytize his gospel of self-help, a marketing gambit by a pharma company that’s running out of money, and a season-long advertisement for a luxury getaway at the sparkling resort where it was filmed.

In my genealogy work I am still trying to find a source or sources for the registration of Great-Great-Grandparents Jacques (aka Jacob) and Marie (aka Mary) (née Katz) Brunhammer. I am currently searching the marriage registration directories, online of course, via the Alsace, Haut-Rhin archives.

If you would like to see my work check out the Brunhammer Doherty Family Tree on Ancestry.com.

Day 195 – (AD 1,357) – 21.0 Miles Today – Jim’s Trek Part V – On My Schwinn 170

Good Day,

This morning I cycled 21.0 miles on my Schwinn 170. I’m still at a 15/25 resistance and I am continuing to clock, my hopes, 5 hours a week. Grand totals now stand at 28,817.2 miles; 46,376.9 kilometers.

And on Mars, I have completed 26.8% of the distance to my next destination and goal point.

Soapbox –

Question - Is #45's prime intention of occupying the Oval Office to undermine and deface everything that President Obama and his predecessors did and put in place, or does he ever intend to truthfully proceed with the management of the Office in favor of all Americans?

Our OPOY, a new quilt, a wall hanging has been completed. We still must create our label.

I’m working on the write-up for Quilts SB. Stay-tuned.

And we’ve drafted the design and created our canvas for our newest piece. Right now we’re coding this one’s title as June 19.

Day 194 1/2 – (AD 1,356 1/2) – 0.0 Miles Today – Jim’s Trek Part V – On My Schwinn 170

Good Day,

Hallelujah!

I have both my desktop and notebook PCs back in the house! It has only taken just about 1 month to finally get the issues corrected. Here's hoping. I sort of having to learn how to re-use the functions and programs that I set up in order to help me with my Trek.

In the meantime, I did make it to Lambert Crater on Mars. I have continued on 59.4 miles on my way to my new destination at Denning Crater. The distance between Lambert and Denning Crater, per WolframAlpha is 300 miles.

To date I have covered 3.894.6 miles on Part V of Jim's Trek.

Day 194 – (AD 1,356) – 21.7 Miles Yesterday – Jim’s Trek Part V – On My Schwinn 170

Good Day,

What can I say?  I still do not have either my desktop nor my notebook. Both in the shop; two completely different issues. It is a wonder what I have had to do to "amuse" myself without two key components of my life.  At least I do have my iPad and my iPhone.  But I can tell you that it is certainly a challenge.

And without my desktop or a fully functioning notebook for almost the complete month of May Pageviews to Jim's Trek dropped by 3,035, from April's 10,287. Certainly tells me something regarding this world we are in and the iota of my funtionality in this telecommunication revolution.

And for that reason I just recorded my stats yesterday on my Schwinn 170.  All-things-being-equal I will be able to post and bring myself back into the technical communication world tomorrow. I am currently borrowing another PC to update all that I can today.

Yesterday I was able to cycle 21.7 miles in my allocated 1 hour time slot on my Schwinn 170. Totals are now at 28,796.2 miles; 46,343.1 kilometers.

And on Mars I have traveled, yet to be determined, 59.45 miles to my next destination and goal point.

Reading -

I noticed an article on FoxNews Tech, (yes, I sometimes gander at FoxNews), an article by Mike Wehner date June 1, 1017, "Scientists may have found evidence of a parallel universe".

When gazing into the heavens, scientists spotted what they refer to as a "cold" area of space. It was observed some time ago, and explaining it proved difficult, but a 2015 study suggested it was merely an area of the universe in which the number of galaxies is dramatically lower than the rest. Unfortunately, subsequent investigations couldn't support that finding, and a new study by Durham University suggests the slim possibility that it's actually evidence of parallel universes is still on the table.

Day 193 – (AD 1,355) – 20.4 Miles Today – Jim’s Trek Part V – On My Schwinn 170

Good Day,

This morning I pedaled 20.4 miles on my Schwinn 170. Totals now stand at 28,774.5 miles, 46,308.2 kilometers.

I cannot write too much this morning as apart from the fact that my desktop PC is in the shop awaiting for the new case, I have to take my HP Notebook into the shop, once again. The Windows 10 1703 upgrade is a pain in the bloody ass.

Last night for supper I made a Pastitsio, courtesy of Ina Garten's recipe.

Take a look at the process images.

Day 192 – (AD 1,354) – 20.0 Miles Today – Jim’s Trek Part V – On My Schwinn 170

Good Day,

Today I cycled my Schwinn 170 another 20.1 miles. Today was a struggle and I truly thought that I would not reach my 20 miles plus within my hour time frame. I did. My totals now stand at 28,754.1 mile; 46,275.3 kilometers. I have also completed 75.27% of my intended goal. (The only thing is that that percentage number just doesn't seem to move as fast as I would like it to.

And today I reached my goal of Lambert Crater on Mars. I actually went a bit further but as I do not have my desktop as yet I cannot provide a new destination and goal point. If my calculations are correct, based on the last leg of my journey I have pedaled 17.2 miles beyond.

Am spending a good part of my time re-creating the Brunhammer Doherty Family Tree using the Ancestry.com Family Tree program. I have been a strong proponent in the past of not putting genealogical information on any subscription service. I always felt since I began working with genealogy around 2003 that I should be the one control of that information. Let me tell you something, Ancestry.com has come a long way since then.

I am following two specific guidelines and holding fast to them. One is that I will not put any information on the Ancestry.com Family Tree database that is a specific reference to any persons currently living. That is key and an important rule to follow. My second rule is that I will NOT "link" to any online information in any other family tree unless it is properly sourced and cited. This means that if there ain't proof it isn't going in any of my family trees.

I can also add a third and a fourth rule. The third is that I have checked the ability of the ged.com facility in order to download the information that I include on the Ancestry.com tree. The purpose for this is to make sure that I can collect my information and data should I decide to close my Ancestry.com subscription membership. (I have been a constant Ancestry member since the year 2001.

The fourth rule is that I make sure that I read the fine print and make sure that I have chosen the option that does not relinquish control of my historical data to Ancestry.

The family tree is the Brunhammer Doherty Family Tree. If you would like access to the tree you will need an invitation from me. You can sign up with Ancestry, and from what I understand, WITHOUT having to take a membership subscription. Feel free to contact me at jsmith58@gmmail.com.

Day 191 – (AD 1,353) – 20.0 Miles Today – Jim’s Trek Part V – On My Schwinn 170

Good Day,

This morning I got on my Schwinn 170 and cycled another 20.0 miles. My totals now stand at 28,734.0 miles; 46,243.0 kilometers. According to my calculations, I have now completed 75.22% of my total goal of 38,201.6 miles. All-in-all, and averaging 20 miles each time I should complete my overall Trek in about 457 cycling days.

Also according to my calculations, I am now 0.7% of the distance from Lambert Crater, m next destination and goal point on Mars. (Still no return of my desktop for PCLand.) Guess I'll have to choose a new destination and goal point or take to the air for a time being while I wait to get my Google Mars program back again.

Soapbox -

Check out the direction of the lines on the graph.

Looks like we're still in for a wild ride.

And I have completed the 8th recipe from Milk Street - Japanese Potato Salad.

Outstanding!

OPOY update - The background quilting has been completed. The outlining/highlighting of each strip is taking some time. We had to decide which looked the best from a distance yet at the same time created a fix for the possibility of "fraying" sides.

Day 190 – (AD 1,352) – 20.7 Miles Today – Jim’s Trek Part V – On My Schwinn 170

Good Day,

Yes, I am back.

I took 13 days off from cycling or exercising. Some sort of bacterial infection in my lower intestine. After all the tests and labs, and symptoms similar to kidney stones, doctors ruled that it was/had to be some bacterial infection.

And this morning, after receiving the clearance signal, I cycled my Schwinn 170 20.7 miles. My totals, I still keep a record, are 28,714.0 miles; 42,210.8 kilometers.

My desktop is at the shop being fixed.  The on/off button broke which means I need a completely new case...and when I have a desktop PC that is customized, well you get the picture.  (Actually, the thought...)  And I am waiting, which means I cannot use Google Earth, albeit Google Mars on my notebook because that program is on my desktop.

So I have adapted.  I am now 94.4% from the center of Lambert Crater.  The "x" is my current location, on Mars.

"The GOP inherits what Trump has wrought", The Washington Post, By Karen Tumulty and Robert Costa May 26, 2017.

"The darker forces that propelled President Trump’s rise are beginning to frame and define the rest of the Republican Party."

We're working on our latest quilt, OPOY. The dimensions are approximately 70" long by 63" wide. This is a very new and different experiment and we are definitely liking the results.

OPOY  - JS AB - Under construction

I began a challenge to myself last week. As I love to cook, and I was able to get a copy of Christopher Kimball's latest endeavor and magazine "Milk Street", I thought that it may be somewhat a hoot to try my luck and try to replicate, as close as possible, almost all the recipes presented. To date, I have accomplished and eaten 7 of the recipes.

Two nights ago I made and devoured Hummus Masabacha (Israeli Hummus) with Kawarma (Spiced Beef Topping). I added a Carrot, Radish, and Red Onion Salad.

Yes, the plates were cleaned. And yes the bread was fresh from the oven.

Keep healthy,

Jim

Day 188 – (AD 1,350) – 20.2 Miles Today – Jim’s Trek Part V – On My Schwinn 170

Good Day,

Today I cycled 20.2 miles on my Schwinn 170. I just compared today’s distance to my overall goal and I am sort of astounded. Today’s 20.2 miles is just 0.05% of my total expected goal. But I have completed 75.08% or 28,683.2 miles or 46,161.2 kilometers.

And this morning, on Mars, I have now completed 86.9% of the distance to my next goal and destination point.

Last night, I made, from scratch Chicken Shrimp and Andouille Gumbo. I decided to follow the recipe I found online from Epicurious.

As I started to gather the ingredients to complete my mis-en-place I noticed that that was one hell of a lot of ingredients. And then I read the “Yield”. “Makes 16 servings”. No, I was not going to make enough for the neighborhood. Nor was I going to be eating Gumbo for the next 2 weeks. Yes, I reduced the ingredients to my norm, 4 servings. That I can manage.

And it was so bloody good that I had two bowls full.

Update and progress on our new OPOY. One needle broken to date; multiple layers of strips. The scrunching while quilting is softening the canvas.

And we begin the design of our next new one - TTTEOTW. Will be transferring drawing design to our muslin strip background.
